Study on Transborder Movement of Amur Tigers and Leopards using Camera Trapping and Molecular Genetic Analysis
The NEASPEC Secretariat organized the Expert Group Meeting (EGM) of the Project, “Study on transborder movement of Amur tigers and leopards using camera trapping and molecular genetic analysis” on 15-16 April 2014 in Incheon, Republic of Korea (ROK). The EGM reviewed existing experience on camera trapping and molecular genetic analysis techniques related to conservation efforts on Amur tigers and leopards, discussed scientific and technical approaches for the Project, and agreed on a project work plan that includes more efficient use of camera trapping, molecular genetic analysis techniques, joint field survey and sharing of knowledge on these matters between China, ROK and the Russian Federation.
Implementing agencies in participating countries are going to conduct camera trapping and sample collection this winter (November 2014-May 2015), and analyze genetic traits with DNA extracts (June-August 2015). As a wrap-up event, the final project report including policy recommendation on species conservation, which will be prepared by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), will be presented at the international workshop in November 2015.
- Opening and welcoming remarks
- Introduction to the project and the EGM
This session is divided into two parts:
1) The NEASPEC Secretariat introduces conservation efforts on target species, with a particular focus on scientific methods including camera trapping and molecular genetic analysis which have been conducted by member States.
2) Representatives of each member States will be invited to provide up-to-date information of the camera trapping/molecular genetic analysis on target species conducted by the national experts and present views on required joint scientific assessment.
The session will discuss scientific methodologies for camera trapping and molecular genetic analysis including DNA analysis (as proposed under 4.2 in the project document),
The session will discuss 1) time frame for the project implementation, and 2) the role of participating experts/agencies.
The session will discuss 1) institutional and administrative arrangement with the agencies, 2) partnership with relevant programmes, and 3) further consultations to be clarified and agreed on implementation plan.
The session will adopt the meeting report containing decisions and conclusions of the meeting.
Participants will visit to laboratories in college of veterinary medicine, SNU, and take part in the award ceremony of the 2nd children’s tiger drawing contest.
